I’ve been a vegetarian on and off for several years. I try to just listen to what my body needs, doing the best I can while giving myself grace. During this trip I had already decided I wanted to try new things in their native areas. So, the first night in New Orleans I tried Gumbo. It was delicious, and I highly recommend

The 2nd day I stood in line at Cafe Du Monde to try authentic beignets for the first time. Unfortunately, by the time I got to the front I realized it was cash only so ultimately I was not able to get any. The line moved quickly, and it was a fairly short walk from the trolley.

On the last night, we had already identified the best drink. The Special from Hard Rock Cafe was strong and only $5. We grabbed one last Special, and then headed for dinner across the street at Bourbon House. Not only did I try gator wings, but we also had oysters for the first time. I would not recommend either, purely because of the texture.
Overall, we drank too much and tried a lot of new food. New Orleans was bigger than I thought, but also less to do than I had imagined. If you’re going for more than a weekend I’d recommend checking out the other Districts for additional adventures. I’d definitely go back, in fact I’ve already booked my return trip, but I’d still rank MS as our favorite stop thus far. We woke up, slightly hungover, and headed off to the next state…Texas!
