We loved San Antonio, but were disappointed that we were heading out of Texas with no cowboy sightings. It’s a 7 hour drive, so I tackled it on a Saturday. We were half way through the drive when the road took us through the small town of Pecos. Any guesses on what Pecos is known for? YOU GUESSED IT! The World’s First Rodeo. How sweet is it when the universe so clearly hears you?!
Now satisfied, we crossed over to NM. On the way in we stopped at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. This was the first National Park we had ever been to, so we were impressed (if we only knew what was to come).

We drove to the top of the cavern after several stops to ooo and awe at the rocks. This was our first real look at rocks, well…ever. That sounds dramatic. Of course we’ve seen rocks before, but not as the landscape. Not instead of grass.

After being AMAZED by the rocks, we went on to the Airbnb. The Airbnb was stuff of dreams: the bathroom was Disney Spa quality (iykyk), the living room was spacious, it had a fenced in front yard, and a private parking spot. We were only in Carlsbad for the night, so we settled in & prepared for an early departure the next morning.
